Chapter 15 - RAC Migration

RAC
Migration Overview
With the
advances in RAC technology in Oracle 10g and RAC cluster databases
utilizing Grid technology, there is increased interest among many
Oracle database customers in using the new features and converting
their existing Oracle database to an Oracle RAC database. The current
standalone database may be in various conditions. The database may be
in 10g stand-alone, or may be in the 9i version or, even still, be in
lower releases. At the same time, the server environment may not be
from the Oracle certified hardware list. Based on these various
factors, the DBA needs to develop an appropriate migration plan.
From an
application point of view, there may be certain additional
requirements and modifications needed to access the RAC database. Once
the database is migrated to a RAC database, the client applications
can either use load-balancing via Oracle*Net configurations, or access
a specific database instance of the RAC database. In case of packaged
applications that, with this upgrade, will just begin accessing the
RAC database, appropriate configuration changes have to be performed.
For example, in the Oracle eBusiness suite, in order to use RAC,
cookies must be set up. In the SAP infrastructure, you may have to
replace the SAP software library, 'dboraslib, with the
latest RAC supported version.
