ORA-27070: skgfdisp: async read/write failed

Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson

  • Error:  "ORA-27070: skgfdisp: async read/write failed"
  • Cause: aioread/aiowrite system call returned error. Additional information indicates starting block number of I/O.

This could be caused for many reasons (including a disk failure), and you will note alert log messages such as these:

ORA-00345: redo log write error block 9656 count 136
ORA-00312: online log 3 thread 1: 'E:\ORADATA\SUCKY\LOG3A.RDO'
ORA-27070: skgfdisp: async read/write failed
ORA-00345: redo log write error block 9656 count 136
ORA-00312: online log 3 thread 1: 'F:\ORADATA\SUCKY\LOG3B.RDO'
ORA-27070: skgfdisp: async read/write failed
ORA-00340: IO error processing online log  of thread

The following messages indicate a disk hardware failure:

OSD-04016: Error queuing an asynchronous I/O request.
O/S-Error: (OS 1117) The request could not be performed because of an I/O device

You can also get this error when attempting to alter a tablespace to "offline" status, and you fail to include the :immediate" clause (e.g. alter tablespace users offline immediate;).  This is because the data file is full and the checkpoint cannot be completed:

ORA-01115 : IO error reading block from file 5 (block #1)
ORA-01110 : datafile 5 : 'd:\oradata\index01.dbf'
ORA-27091 : skgfqio: unable to queue I/O
ORA-27070 : skgfdisp: async read/write failed
