ORA-27069: skgfdisp: attempt to do I/O beyond the range of the file

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonSeptember 21,  2015

Question:  I got the following error.

ODBC error: [Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]ORA-01114: IO error writing block to file 201 (block # 524041)
ORA-27069: skgfdisp: attempt to do I/O beyond the range of the file
OSD-04026: Invalid parameter passed. (OS 524055)
ORA-01114: IO error

What is the cause of the ORA-270698 error?

Answer:  This is bad news, you have an I/O error, likely a bad disk.  If you are on a server, check /etc/syslog and see the details of the I/O error.  The docs note this on the ORA-270698 error:

ORA-27069: attempt to do I/O beyond the range of the file

Cause: internal error, the range of blocks being read or written is outside the range of the file, additional information indicates the starting block number, number of blocks in I/O, and the last valid block in the file

Action: check for trace file and contact Oracle Support

In either case, open a severity 1 service request with Oracle technical support, and prepare for a disk recovery.
