ORA-16401: archivelog rejected by RFS tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonAugust 4, 2015

Question:  I have the great book Oracle Data Guard by Rampant TechPress, and I have set-up Data Guard, and everything seems to working fine.  My logs are shipped and applied on the standby , but the alert log in primary has this error message:

Error 16401 creating standby archive log file at host 'stdby10g'
ORA-16401: archivelog rejected by RFS
*** 2015-08-03 22:13:11.582
Error 3135 detaching RFS from standby instance at host 'stdby10g'

How do I fix the error "ORA-16401: archivelog rejected by RFS"?

Answer:  The "ORA-16401: archivelog rejected by RFS" error is a "noise" error.  Per the docs:. the ORA-16401 says that no action is necessary; this is an informational statement provided to record the event for diagnostic purposes."

ORA-16401: archivelog rejected by RFS

Cause: An attempt was made to re-archive an existing archivelog. This usually happens because either a multiple primary database or standby database(s) or both are trying to archive to this standby database.

Action: See alert log and trace file for more details. No action is necessary; this is an informational statement provided to record the event for diagnostic purposes.

In RAC, the ORA-16401 message often appears because the DBA has failed to set archive_log_target the same on all nodes of a RAC database.  As per the Oracle RAC deployment guide we see:

"ARCHIVE_LAG_TARGET - Different values for instances in your RAC database are likely to increase overhead because of additional automatic synchronization performed by the database processing."
