ORA-02085: database link string connect to string tips

Oracle Error Tips by Donald Burleson(S. Karam)

The Oracle docs note this on the ora-02085 error:

ORA-02085: database link string connects to string
Cause: a database link connected to a database with a different name. The connection is rejected.

Action: create a database link with the same name as the database it connects to, or set global_names=false.

MOSC documentation offers some advice on "ORA-02085 errors when accessing Oracle Rdb by database link" with SQL*Net for Rdb 7.1.5 with Oracle; Operating system AlphaVMS 7.2-1
In the document, ORA-02085 occurs upon attempting to access Oracle Rdb through the datbase link:

SVRMGR> create public database link OCI_715
2> connect to sqluser71 identified by my_secret
3> using 'PAWLEY';
Statement processed.
SVRMGR> exit
Server Manager complete.

$ sqlplus sqluser71/my_secret

SQL*Plus: Release - Production on Fri Aug 31 08:38:40 2001

Connected to:
Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release - Production
With the Partitioning option
JServer Release - Production

SQL> select * from dual@OCI_715;
select * from dual@OCI_715

ERROR at line 1:
ORA-02085: database link OCI_715.US.ORACLE.COM connects to .WORLD

The solution and brief explanation of why ORA-02085 is thrown is also shown on the documentation:

By default SQL*Net for Rdb expects the domain name to be .WORLD.
If the TNSNAMES.ORA alias name is something other than .WORLD
then define the following system logical on the system where
SQL*Net for Rdb is configured:

$ define/system SQLNET_DOMAIN "the_domain_name"

For example, if the TNSNAMES.ORA alias is RDB.US.ORACLE.COM then:

Stop and start the OCI service.
