ORA-01276: Cannot add file Tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonOctober 6, 2015

Question: I am running an Data Pump import with a remap statement and I am getting the ORA-01276 error:

impdp system/oracle full=y directory=ATA_PUMP_IR dumpfile=IRISexp%U.dmp remap_datafile=/'+PDATA/iris/datafile/tbs2.302.699/':

Answer:  First, use the oerr command line utility to lookup your error:

ORA-01276: Cannot add file string. File has an Oracle Managed Files file name.

Cause: An attempt was made to add to the database a datafile, log file, control file, snapshot control file, backup control file, datafile copy, control file copy or backuppiece with an Oracle Managed Files file name.

Action: Retry the operation with a new file name.

In this case, the original file name was an ASM file, and an ASM file cannot be re-mapped to a non-ASM file.  Further, a non-ASM instance cannot automatically create the ASM file.

The easiest solution is to pre-create the tablespace and the associated ASM file name will be assigned by ASM.  You can then use that ASM file name with your impdp remap statement.

Normally, you need to get the fully-qualified name and resolve the +DATA into a fully-qualified address.  If you are changing Operating Systems you have to put in the correct string:

To see the full file names you can "punch" the tablespace definition with impdp like this:

impdp system/oracle dumpfile=filename.dmp include=tablespace sqlfile=ts_def.sql

This will put the full-file name into the file ts_def.sql.  You can then open this file to see the full ASM file name.

See MOSC Doc 734681.1 (ORA-1276 Experienced During Import Of Tablespaces When Using Oracle Managed Files) for details.
