ORA-00923: FROM keyword not found where expected tips

Oracle Error Tips by Donald Burleson

The Oracle docs note this on the ora-00923 error*:

ORA-00923 FROM keyword not found where expected

Cause: In a SELECT or REVOKE statement, the keyword FROM was either missing, misplaced, or misspelled. The keyword FROM must follow the last selected item in a SELECT statement or the privileges in a REVOKE statement.
Action: Correct the syntax. Insert the keyword FROM where appropriate. The SELECT list itself also may be in error. If quotation marks were used in an alias, check that double quotation marks enclose the alias. Also, check to see if a reserved word was used as an alias.

*It is important to note that ORA-00923 does not exist within Oracle 10g

ORA-00923 originates from the necessity for the keyword FROM to follow the final selected item in a SELECT statement, or privileges in a REVOKE statement.  When ORA-00923 is thrown, it is because a SELECT or REVOKE statement has one of the following problematic syntaxes in the keyword FROM:

  • missing
  • misspelled
  • misplaced

There are many areas of interest when resolving ORA-00923:

  • You should appropriately correct the syntax, inserting the keyword FROM where necessary.
  • Keep in mind that the SELECT list itself could be in error, which could also cause ORA-00923 to appear.
  • Quotation marks should also be evaluated when correcting ORA-00923, as they should enclose the alias (if used within the alias).
  • Also, find out if you used a reserve word as an alias.
