Online redo logs and RAID tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonJuly 7,  2015

Question:  I have heard that Oracle does not recommend using RAID-0+1 (SAME) for the online redo logs.  What are the best option for using RAID on Oracle redo logs?

Answer:  Because Oracle redo logs are already multiplexed at the Oracle level, striping such as RAID1 or RAID-10 provide no benefit.  Oracle redo logs can be run with RAID (RAID0 or RAID0+1), but it is important that they be segregated onto different disks spindles, or used with SSD.  See my notes on tuning Oracle online redo logs

Redo logs are extremely write intensive, and high bandwidth storage such as SSD are ideas for relieving I/O bottlenecks.  Also, online redo logs should always be multiplexed, and RAID1 provides few additional benefits.
