Managing the Oracle alert log file

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonOctober 14,  2015

Question:  I'm new to Oracle and I need to understand how to manage the Oracle alert log file.  The Oracle alert log has many messages, and how do I know what message are important?  Can I send an e-mail when a important message goes into the Oracle alert log?  Can I truncate the alert log file?

Answer:  Yes, the Oracle alert log needs to be managed, and there are several common alert log tasks:

- Periodically archive and re-initialize the alert log file.  The alert log can grow very large, and after a week many of the messages are of no value.  You can remove the alert log file, and Oracle will automatically re-create it.

- Scan the alert log for errors and send alerts - You need top schedule a dbms_scheduler job to scan for selected errors and trigger an e-mail alert when found.  See my script to monitor the alert log.

Also note that you can write your own custom messages to the alert log file, see Writing to the Oracle Alert Log and x$dbgalertext.

And note that if you define the alert log file as an external table, you can manage the alert log file contents with standard SQL statements.  See Extract alert log messages with SQL and in 11g using x$dbgalertext.

See these notes for details on managing the alert log file:
