Inside Locally Managed Tablespaces

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonFebruary 17, 2015

Question:  Why is it important for me to migrate my dictionary managed tablespaces to locally managed tablespaces?  The dictionary managed tablespaces still work fine in 11g, and I need a good reason to migrate them to locally managed tablespaces.

Answer:  Oracle only allows dictionary managed tablespaces for backward compatibility, and nobody uses them anymore because having all of the tablespace metadata in the system tablespace causes contention.  See my notes on how to move dictionary managed tablespaces to locally managed tablespaces.

Starting in Oracle8i we saw the ability to remove the data dictionary as a point of contention (dictionary managed tablespaces) by moving Oracle extent management blocks out of the data dictionary and into the tablespace itself with locally managed tablespaces.  In later releases of Oracle, locally managed tablespaces (the extent management local clause) became the default for tablespace extent management.
