Oracle DML error logging

Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson

Oracle has many ways to log changes to the database, including traditional insert and update triggers that can be used to create audit logs of changes to crucial tables.

Oracle8i also introduced system-wide DDL triggers that allow the DBA to log all changes against a production database.

Dr. Tim Hall has a page titled "DML error logging in Oracle10g release 2" where he notes the new DML logging feature of Oracle 10g release 2:

SELECT * FROM   source

Once defined, the DML error log can be accessed via SQL:

SELECT ora_err_number$, ora_err_mesg$
FROM   err$_dest
WHERE  ora_err_tag$ = 'INSERT';

--------------- ---------------------------------------------------------
           1400 ORA-01400: cannot insert NULL into ("TEST"."DEST"."CODE")
           1400 ORA-01400: cannot insert NULL into ("TEST"."DEST"."CODE")
