The importance of communications skills for the Oracle DBA

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonApril 26,  2015

Question:  I am fresher to become Oracle DBA wishes to know more information about English talking skill set for newcomer in programation of Oracle.  Do writing good English skill above all?  Pls do the needful as this enquiry is extremely urgent.

Answer:  You may be the victim of a web scam that advertizes highly-paid Oracle jobs (many over $100,000 per year) to un-trained laymen, many of whom are foreigners where English is not their first language.

Oracle is a profession, just like being an architect or engineer, a highly-respected computer science position that requires year of college and outstanding English communications skills.  See these important notes on becoming an Oracle profesional:

Oracle is a respected profession, not a trade, and it takes years of intensive study.  See these notes on how to get an Oracle DBA job, how Oracle DBA jobs will be different in the year 2020 and Oracle DBA job duties. Also, many folks ask how much is a college degree worth?

Please be advised that Oracle database administration is a mission-critical management job that requires a professional degree and exceptional communications skills.  The Oracle DAB must communicate in-depth with professional managers from all areas of the corporation (accounting, finance, manufacturing), and college-level communications skills are essential.

In my job requirements list I always stress that written communications skills are an absolute requirement for the professional Oracle DBA, and I've seen many technically competent professional rejected because they cannot assemble a coherent sentence.

I have recommend training specifically designed to improve the speaking skills of Oracle professionals:
  • Dale Carnegie - This is a timeless program, essential for anybody who must deal with the public.

  • Toastmasters - This is a great way to get started speaking in public.

  • Auctioneer school - Janet and I attended school and I became a licensed auctioneer to hone my speaking skills.  I highly recommend auctioneering school  because learning to think on your feet is an important skill for every instructor!
