 full transportable data pump Tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonMarch 15, 2015

Question:  How do I use the 12c full transportable data pump feature?

Answer:  (by Earl Schaffer) Full transportable operations includes full transportable support for multitenant container databases (CDBs):

The 12c Oracle Data Pump full transportable feature lets you move an entire database from one Oracle Database to another. You can use the transportable feature to move a non-CDB database into a pluggable database (PDB).

You can also use this full transportable feature to move a PDB into another PDB. You might want to do this if you are moving across multiple database versions or onto another OS platform.

Full transportable support for non-container databases (CDBs)

The new Oracle Data Pump full transportable feature lets you easily move an entire database from one Oracle Database instance to another.

You can use this functionality to move a non-CDB into another non-CDB. You can then transport a non-CDB into a CDB at a later date. You can also use the full transportable feature to move a PDB into a non-CDB.

Full transportable operations can reduce the export time and especially, the import time, because table data does not need to be unloaded and reloaded and index structures in user tablespaces do not need to be re-created.

Full transportable is more automated than transportable tablespaces because it moves the metadata and user data that resides in non-transportable tablespaces than would previously have been moved in multiple operations. This makes the full transportable feature useful for efficiently moving a database to a new computer system or upgrading to a new release of Oracle Database.
