Fix Hung Redo Log Archiving

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonFebruary 27,  2015

Question:  My database apparently experienced some problems relating to the archiving process which temporarily hung my database.

Fri Feb 27 07:41:18 2015
Thread 1 advanced to log sequence 9747
Current log# 3 seq# 9747 mem# 0: E:\ORACLE\ORACLE_REDO_LOG_FILES\P3EC\P3EC_REDO3A.RDO
Current log# 3 seq# 9747 mem# 1: E:\ORACLE\ORACLE_REDO_LOG_FILES\P3EC\P3EC_REDO3B.RDO
Fri Feb 27 08:01:15 2015
Thread 1 cannot allocate new log, sequence 9748
All online logs needed archiving
Current log# 3 seq# 9747 mem# 0: E:\ORACLE\ORACLE_REDO_LOG_FILES\P3EC\P3EC_REDO3A.RDO
Current log# 3 seq# 9747 mem# 1: E:\ORACLE\ORACLE_REDO_LOG_FILES\P3EC\P3EC_REDO3B.RDO
Fri Feb 27 08:01:17 2015
Archiver process freed from errors. No longer stopped
Fri Feb 27 08:01:17 2015
ARCH: Archival stopped, error occurred. Will continue retrying
Fri Feb 27 08:01:17 2015
Errors in file f:\oracle\oracle_trace\p3ec\p3ec_arc9_1184.trc:
ORA-16038: log 1 sequence# 9728 cannot be archived
ORA-19504: failed to create file ""
ORA-00312: online log 1 thread 1: 'E:\ORACLE\ORACLE_REDO_LOG_FILES\P3EC\P3EC_REDO1A.RDO'
ORA-00312: online log 1 thread 1: 'E:\ORACLE\ORACLE_REDO_LOG_FILES\P3EC\P3EC_REDO1B.RDO'

How do I troubleshoot and fix this hung redo log archiver error?

Answer:  It looks like you ARCH process is not keeping-up with your redo filling (the stopping and re-starting).  If you are under a high update (DML) load, consider making your online redo logs larger:

See my notes on tuning redo log performance here.

If this is production, log a sev1 SR immediately with Oracle tech support . . .

Start with this command:

SQL> archive log list

Why could ARCH hang?

  • No space in archived redo log filesystem - Check your OS directory space "df –k inode"

  • OS hang - Check "ps -ef|grep arch"

Your database can "hang" preventing you from logging on (because it needs to write redo), so if you get REALLY stuck, you can nuke files from the archived redo log filesystem.

Else you may have to try bouncing the instance . . .
