Find partition for a row tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonSeptember 13, 2015

 How do I quickly see what partition an row belongs in?  I want to find the partition for any given row such that I can select the partition name for a rows and see what partition is associated with any given row.

Answer:  The Oracle partition is supposed to be transparent and the data attributes of the row (salient columns) determine which partition as row is assigned to.

column table_name         format a20
column partition_name     format a20
column subpartition_name  format a20
select table_name,

order by

If you acquire the ROWID for a table you can run queries to get the partition for a table, or you could use complex scripts such as this to reveal riws within oartitions.

select table_name,
       to_date (
          trim (
             '''' from regexp_substr (
                          extractvalue (
                             getxmltype (
                                'select high_value from all_tab_partitions
                                 where table_name='''
                                || table_name
                                || ''' and table_owner = '''
                                || table_owner
                                || ''' and partition_name = '''
                                || partition_name
                                || ''''),
          'syyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss')
  from all_tab_partitions
 where table_name = 'SALES' and table_owner = 'SH'

There a many other ways to find the partition where a rows resides and a Google search will reveal these SQL statements.
