Data Pump export fails when using subquery

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonJune 29, 2015

Question:  I have an Data Pump export with a query option that contains a subquery and the export fails, even though the syntax is correct.  How to I do a subquery in an export?

Answer:  The secret for using subqueries in an export is the parfile.  Also, see these tips for using the query clause, and see Bert Scalzo's book "Oracle Utilities" for a full discussion of export tips.  Here is an example of a complex SQL sub-query statement that is used in a Data Pump export:

expdp / file=$file tables=myexport query\=" where myexport_pidm in (select myexport_pidm from purdue.myexport where myexport_to_extract\=\'Y\' and myexport_export_status\=\'N\')\"

In this case, the subquery is causing this error:[7]: 0403-057 Syntax error at line 7 : `"' is not matched.

The solution is to place the parms in a parfile, and this will then work:

expdp / file=$file parfile=myparfile.par
