Oracle export query option tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonDecember 29,  2015

The Oracle Data Pump utility has a "query" option that allows you to add an SQL "where clause" to filter-out rows from a table or set of tables.

You can also make a complex subquery execute using the query option (see example below).  For complete examples, see Bert Scalzo's great book "Advanced Oracle Utilities".

In some cases, the query option will not work properly in a command line:

expdp scott/tiger query="where deptno=20"

expdp scott/tiger query=\"where sex=\'m\'\"

In this case, move the SQL query into a parfile and re-execute the export query option:

exp / file=$file tables=shrlgpa parfile=mypar.par

Here is an example of a complex SQL sub-query statement that is used in a Data Pump export:

expdp / file=$file tables=myexport query\=" where myexport_pidm in (select myexport_pidm from purdue.myexport where myexport_to_extract\=\'Y\' and myexport_export_status\=\'N\')\"

In this case, the subquery is causing this error:[7]: 0403-057 Syntax error at line 7 : `"' is not matched.

The solution is to place the parms in a parfile, and this will then work:

expdp / file=$file parfile=myparfile.par

For complete details, see the book "Advanced Oracle Utilities".
