Sending e-mail with wwv_flow_mail

Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson

The wwv_flow_mail PL/SQL package is used to facilitate sending e-mail from inside applications that support calls to PL/SQL packages (APEX, SQL*Forms).

APEX has the htmldb_mail package (a synonym for the wwv_flow_mail package), and wwv_flow_mail and htmldb_mail have the same procedures.  To send multiple e-mails from a multiple select LOV (list of values drop down), click here.

You must enable the utl_smtp software to use wwv_flow_mail:

SQL> @$ORACLE_HOME/javavm/install/initjvm.sql
SQL> @$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/initplsj.sql

Inside the wwv_flow_mail package

The wwv_flow_mail package as a background, push_queue, and two send procedure (using overloading):

Package Name Procedure Argument In Out Datatype
WWV_FLOW_MAIL BACKGROUND P_ID IN NUMBER
    P_SMTP_HOSTNAME IN VARCHAR2
    P_SMTP_PORTNO IN VARCHAR2
  PUSH_QUEUE P_SMTP_HOSTNAME IN VARCHAR2
    P_SMTP_PORTNO IN VARCHAR2
  SEND(1) P_TO IN VARCHAR2
    P_FROM IN VARCHAR2
    P_BODY IN VARCHAR2
    P_BODY_HTML IN VARCHAR2
    P_SUBJ IN VARCHAR2
    P_CC IN VARCHAR2
    P_BCC IN VARCHAR2
  SEND(2) P_TO IN VARCHAR2
    P_FROM IN VARCHAR2
    P_BODY IN CLOB
    P_BODY_HTML IN CLOB
    P_SUBJ IN VARCHAR2
    P_CC IN VARCHAR2
    P_BCC IN VARCHAR2

The wwv_flow_mail.push_queue Procedure

The wwv_flow_mail.push_queue procedure is scheduled to execute every 10 minutes, but you can execute it manually for immediate e-mail sending:

begin
wwv_flow_mail.push_queue(
   P_SMTP_HOSTNAME => '192.111.99.99',
   P_SMTP_PORTNO => '25'
);
end;

The wwv_flow_mail.send procedures

There are two overloaded versions of the send procedure and Oracle knows which to invoke by the argument data types passed to the send procedure.  If you pass a CLOB datatype for p_body and p_body_html, then the second send procedure is invoked.
