Display Oracle data dictionary tables

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonSeptember 3,  2015

This script can be used to display table definitions from the data dictionary, as an alternative to the dbms_metadata package.

Note:  you can use the commented areas of the script to display related groups of Oracle tables.  For complete Oracle data dictionary scripts, see the Oracle script download page.

set linesize 180
cursor tab_cursor is
   t.comments table_comments
   dict t
-- t.table_name like 'DBA_%'
-- or
-- t.owner_name = 'MYOWNER'
order by
cursor col_cursor(v_table_name in varchar2) is
   c.column_name, tc.data_type, c.comments

   dict_columns c, dba_tab_columns tc

where c.table_name = tc.table_name
and c.column_name = tc.column_name
and c.table_name = v_table_name;
for table_list in tab_cursor loop
dbms_output.put_line(rpad('-', 180, '-'));
for column_list in col_cursor(table_list.table_name) loop
dbms_output.put_line(rpad(column_list.column_name, 30) ||' '||rpad(substr(column_list.data_type, 0, 15), 15) ||' '||substr(column_list.comments, 0, 135));
end loop;
end loop;
