Oracle disaster recovery details

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonAugust 3, 2015

Question:  What are the components of a good disaster recovery plan?

Answer:  Any disaster recovery plan will be fully tested and ensure 100% recoverability.

All operational data is stored in mirrored disk to protect against hardware failure, and this is supplemented with replication to ensure 100% reliability in disaster recovery.

We recommend a "safe site" approach to disaster recovery, storing all data in multiple locations via replication.  The quality of the replicated data is verified at each remote location, and everything required to keep the company running is included in the replicated data.

Complete database and operational documentation is replicated to multiple, geographically distributed locations, all more than 500 miles apart.  Should one site fail due to a natural disaster, all computer files can be restored to one of the backup servers.

Once a year the recovery mechanism is tested for operational efficiency.  For more details on Oracle disaster recovery planning, see:

Kamran Agayev offers this video tutorial on Oracle disaster recovery.  This disaster recovery video information is from the forthcoming RMAN book Oracle Backup & Recovery from Rampant Tech Press:
