Difference between ASMM and AMM tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonApril 14, 2015

Question:  What is the Difference between ASMM and AMM?  I understand that the difference between ASMM and AMM depends on the release of Oracle.

Answer:  Yes, Oracle ASMM and Oracle AMM are for different releases of Oracle:

  • AMM in Oracle 11g:  The 11g release uses AMM and manages all of the SGA AND PGA via the memory_target parameter.  Also, AMM does not use Linux hugepages. Some experts DO NOT recommend using Automatic Shared Memory Management (AMM, e.g. setting memory_target) with Linux hugepages. See MOSC note 749851.1 "HugePages and Oracle Database 11g Automatic Memory Management (AMM) on Linux". Also see MOSC notes 361323.1 and 361468.1.

  • ASMM in Oracle10g:  Oracle ASMM was with Oracle 10g and uses two parameters  sga_max_size for the SGA and pga_aggregate_target for the PGA.  Also, beware that AMM re-size operations can cripple Oracle performance in some cases, where there s not enough RAM for the optimal pool sizes.

As we see, AMM is the evolution of ASMM for release 11g and beyond.
