Oracle data pump impdp import modes

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonJanuary 3,  2015

Oracle Data Pump has several import modes, allowing you to import at many levels.  Best of all, you can mix the export and import levels.  For example, you can do a FULL export, and a tablespace level import.  Here are the Data Pump import modes:

  • Full:  A full import is set with "FULL=Y", and imports the entire contents of the expdp dump file.
  • Schema level Import:  Schema level imports are specified by "SCHEMAS=schema1, schema2,  . . . schemaN).  As you might guess, the SCHEMAS syntax imports the specified schemas from the expdp dump file.
  • Table level Import:  Just like the older imp utility, you specify "TABLES=table1, table2, &c.
  • Tablespace level Import:  Data Pump supports the TABLESPACES clause to allow you to import all objects within a tablespace.  If a table has dependent objects in another tablespace, they are also imported.
  • Transportable Tablespace Import:  By using "TRANSPORT TABLESPACES=tablespace1, tablespace2, you can import transportable tablespaces.

For complete details, see the book "Advanced Oracle Utilities".

Example 1: Import User into a Different Schema

impdp system/manager \
SCHEMAS=usr01 \
REMAP_SCHEMA=usr01:usr02 \
DUMPFILE=dpump_dir:usr01.dmp \
EXCLUDE=index, materialized_view \

Example 2: Import with Data Option

impdp system/manager \,hr.job_history \
CONTENT=data_only \
DUMPFILE= dpump_dir:table.dmp \
