Oracle cross platform replication

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonJuly 24, 2015

Question:  We are running Oracle 10g on an IBM mainframe in a Linux partition and we want to replicate to a Sun sparc platform. We cannot use Dataguard since the databases are on dissimilar platforms. How can you replicate data between different computers on different platforms?  Does Streams support replication

Answer:  According to MOSC Note: 413484.1 "Data Guard Support for Heterogeneous Primary and Standby Systems in Same Data Guard Configuration" cross platform Data Guard is not supported. . . .

To replicate across operating system environments the character sets and endian values must match. . From the book "Oracle Streams", you can use a logical replication method, like n-way Streams whereby the DML transactions are shipped and executed remotely.

Also, as noted in the book "Oracle Replication" you can replicate between platforms.  The Oracle 11g documentation notes that Streams local capture processes also provide more flexibility in replication environments with different platforms or different versions of Oracle Database:

"When one of the procedures in the DBMS_STREAMS_TABLESPACE_ADM package moves or copies tablespaces to a database that is running on a different platform, the procedure can convert the datafiles to the appropriate platform if the conversion is supported.

The V$TRANSPORTABLE_PLATFORM dynamic performance view lists all platforms that support cross-platform transportable tablespaces. When a tablespace repository is used, the platform conversion is automatic if it is supported. When a tablespace repository is not used, you must specify the platform to which or from which the tablespace is being converted."
