Question: I have a UNIX/Linux server and I want to be able to read and write flat files across different clients and servers, some of which do not have the Oracle database installed. What tools does Oracle offer for cross-platform reading and writing of OS files?

Answer: Please note that there are several ways to write and read files across platforms:

text_io: The text_io package will write from Oracle to a PC client.
utl_http: See using utl_http for cross platform uploading data from a PC into Oracle.
utl_file: You can read and write files across platforms if you use utl_file, but you must have Oracle database installed on both sides.

You can also create custom mount points from your Oracle server to remote clients using third-party software tools such as Samba.
