Could not start cluster stack

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonMarch 5,  2016

Question: During a RAC install (when configuring OCFS2, using the ocfs2console GUI).  When I select cluster > configure nodes I am getting th following error:

"Could not start cluster stack".
"This must be resolved before any OCFS2 file system can be mounted.".

What do I do to resolve this could not start cluster stack error?

Answer:  First, remember the ocfs2 is obsolete and you may want to use another cluster filesystem.  The ocfs2 was effectively obsoleted in 10g by ASM, and was re-obsoleted in release 11.2.x by ACFS.

Anyway, the "could not start cluster stack" error can be due to several factors:

- Missing bash profile path: Add /sbin in .bash_profile under ~ Directory as the following . . .

export PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$ORA_CRS_HOME/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin

Then log out then back again.

- Invalid ocfs2 version:  Confirm that you have installed correct OCFS2 version packages, which should be matched with your running kernel version.  Also, cross check and install rpm packages relevant to OCFS2:

The output of following commands will be helpful.

#uname -a
# rpm -qa --qf "%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}_%{ARCH}\\n" |grep ocfs2

- Retry using a manual install:

   1. Set up cluster.conf as documented

   2. As root, /etc/init.d/o2cb online

- Check permissions:  Check dmesg (/var/log/messages) for any relevant msgs and check permissions.

- Running on an unsupported OS:  Make sure to check the RAC compatibility matrix.

- Missing module:

find /lib/modules/`uname -r` -name configfs.ko

If the module is there, as it should be, do:

depmod -a

and try the operation again.

If it is not there, reinstall ocfs2:

rpm --erase ocfs2-2.6.9-
rpm -ivh ocfs2-2.6.9-

- Manually configure OCFS2:  Run +/usr/sbin/ocfs2console+ GUI that does the configuration and distribution of the ocfs2 config file (across ocfs2 cluster nodes) for you.
