Change column order within Oracle table

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonMay 23, 2013

Question:  I want to change the order that my columns appears within my Oracle table.

Answer:  The order that the columns are stored on the data blocks can be changed but it's an academic exercise because it makes no difference whatsoever.

Your SQL can retrieve the columns in any order you want.

Generally there should be no need to have columns listed in a particular order other than for cosmetic sake. If your client is one of the select few people who simply MUST have things their way without good reasons, you can just create a view to list the columns in any order they like without disturbing the actual table underneath the view.

But if you really want to change the order of columns within a table, you can "move" a column within a table using CTAS:

create table newtab
select col3, col2, col1 from tab;

rename tab to oldtab;

rename newtab to tab;

recreate indexes and constraints
