Finding Oracle business intelligence experts

Oracle Tips by Burleson Consulting

In a world where anyone can proclaim themselves an Oracle business intelligence expert, you have to carefully research the qualifications and experience of any Oracle professional who claims to be expert in business intelligence, decision support systems, data mining and Oracle OLAP.  There is a rash of foreigners who are publishing in Oracle Business Intelligence, puffing their credentials and real skills, creating a credibility vacuum on the Oracle community.

I'm an Oracle business intelligence expert because I have been performing OLAP and DSS analysis for more than 20 years, starting with magnetic tapes and SAS software.  In the years hence I have served as the Chairman of the IDMS Large User Advisory Committee, Published academic research on decision support systems, and worked extensively with Oracle business intelligence technology for systems that controlled billions of dollars.

Finding an Oracle Business Intelligence Expert

It's sad that there are many imposters in the IT profession today and there are some guidelines for finding a real business intelligence expert:

  • A Published resume - There are lots of fakers and pretenders in Oracle business intelligence and many self-proclaimed experts who refuse to publish their resumes.  All real Oracle business intelligence experts are proud of their resume and work experience.

  • Use a expert in the USA - In Oracle business intelligence, it's critical to choose an expert who resides in your country.  Data privacy laws vary widely between countries, and you must be able to get protection from your laws.  This is especially important for Oracle BI since BI experts have access to all of your confidential information.  Any Oracle BI expert should have a complete background check.

  • Verify credentials - It's highly unlikely that a layman could acquire the equivalent of graduate-level studies in the complex architectures of Oracle OLAP, decision support systems and multivariate statistics.  These educational foundations are indispensable for a real Oracle business intelligence professional.

  • Check publications - All real Oracle business intelligence experts will publish extensively, doing BI research in academic journals, writing books and publishing in professional magazines.  Remember, there is a big difference between journals like "Information and Management" and online magazines, and the real experts will be chosen to write business intelligence books by major publishers.

  • Verify Experience - By definition, gaining expertise in business intelligence requires decades of real-world experience, and not just within the Oracle BI tools.  It's rare to find an Oracle BI expert under the age of 45 years-old.

These are just a few tips for weeding-out false Oracle BI "experts" and ensuring that you get the expert business intelligence support that you are seeking.

If you need a real Oracle business intelligence expert for your Oracle project, don't take changes with unknown foreigners or self-aggrandizing consultants.  Choose a BI consultant with a proven track-record of success in implementing complex Oracle systems.

If you like Oracle tuning, see the book "Oracle Tuning: The Definitive Reference", with 950 pages of tuning tips and scripts.

You can buy it direct from the publisher for 30%-off and get instant access to the code depot of Oracle tuning scripts.
