Types of Oracle auditing?

Oracle security Tips by Donald Burleson

Question:

What the different ways to audit all DML changes to an Oracle database?  I want to audit all inserts, updates and deletes and I understand that Oracle has several audit tools.  Which audit tool is best?

Answer:

Because Oracle is the world's most flexible database, we have many choices.  Each of these is described in detail in my book "Oracle Privacy Security Auditing", and you can buy it at this link and get instant access to Oracle auditing scripts.  I also have this Oracle auditing whitepaper.  Oracle has several auditing tools.  If you are not a proficient DBA, you may want to obtain Oracle training before attempting to use these sophisticated auditing tools.

  • System Level Triggers - You can audit Oracle user activity, DDL (great for auditing change control), and server errors.

  • Oracle LogMiner auditing - This LogMiner Oracle audit approach utilizes the Oracle redo logs to track and audit all database changes.

  • Oracle Audit Command - This is the innate Oracle audit tool, but it has several shortcomings.  See my notes on the Oracle audit command.

  • Oracle fine-grained auditing - The FGA auditing package provides for Oracle auditing

  • Third party tools - Tools such as Oracle AuditPack and EventPack can provide detailed audit trails for Oracle user activity.

If you like Oracle tuning, see the book "Oracle Tuning: The Definitive Reference", with 950 pages of tuning tips and scripts.

You can buy it direct from the publisher for 30%-off and get instant access to the code depot of Oracle tuning scripts.
