ASM add volume and add disk commands

Oracle Database Tips by Donald BurlesonMay 28, 2013

Question:  I want to understand how to add a volume in ASM.  How do you create a volume and then add the volume to an ASM diskgroup?

Answer:  Within an ASM diskgroup,  a "volume" is a named chunk of storage of a given size.
Starting in 11gr2, the Oracle ASM Dynamic Volume Manager (ADVM) provides volume management services and a standard disk device driver interface to clients.

For example, here we use the asmcmd utility to create a volume using the volcreate command.  This create a volume named volume2 within the ASM diskgroup my_diskgroup:

ASMCMD> volcreate -G my_diskgroup -s 1000m volume2

Adding a volume to a diskgroup

Here we add a volume to a ASM diskgroup using SQL*Plus:.

SQL>  alter diskgroup my_diskgroup1 add volume dg1_vol1 size 1000m;

Adding disks to ASM

Oracle provides the alter diskgroup command to adding or removing physical disks within SQL*Plus:

SQL> alter diskgroup my_diskgroup add disk '/devices/rhdisk1';
