Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson

Hotsos Profiler TM

First, Profiler is not an Oracle Corp utility.  Cary Millsap and Gary Goodman founded Hotsos.com when they saw a need for a performance problem-solving tool. Working with others, they developed Hotsos Profiler.  This tool makes short work out of analyzing trace files.  All that is needed is to upload a trace file to a web portal or use the available stand-alone tool.  Then a report can be reviewed that contains summarized data to help identify the problem.

This tool overcomes some of the weaknesses in the other tools.  Similar to Trace Analyzer, Hotsos Profiler makes the trace file summary and header information more presentable.  See Figure 3.8. One of the things Hotsos Profiler adds is in the Interval Resource Profile that shows the Response Time Components. It makes it very clear which component, wait event or CPU time, was primarily responsible for the duration of this task.  From there, clicking on the hyperlink navigates to the section of the report where the specific SQL Statement ID's can be found. They too are sorted in descending order by their contribution to the given response time component so it is easier to identify the most expensive statement.  The SQL statement ID is also hyperlinked to the SQL statement summary. This provides specific information on the statement and will allow a competent person to resolve the bottleneck that is holding back performance.
