Enterprise Manager Configuration Assistant (EMCA)

Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson

Advanced Oracle Utilities: The Definitive Reference by Rampant TechPress is written by top Oracle database experts (Bert Scalzo, Donald Burleson, and Steve Callan).  The following is an excerpt from the book.

emca command

The Enterprise Manager Configuration Assistant (EMCA) provides the DBA a utility for configuring Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) for an instance. Of course, the Database Configuration Assistant offers that choice graphical when initially creating the database. However, it may happen that it is not chosen and then later needs adding. The emca utility is run as a command line invocation as shown here:

$ emca [operation] [mode] [type] [flags] [parameters]

Only certain combinations of emca command operations, modes and types are valid.

The most common use case scenarios include:

1.      To configure the database control for a database, the syntax is as follows:

$ emca -config dbcontrol db [-repos (create | recreate)] [-cluster] [-silent] [-backup] [parameters]

2.      To configure the central agent management for a database or an ASM instance, the syntax is as follows:

$ emca -config centralAgent (db | asm) [-cluster] [-silent] [parameters]

3.      To configure both the database control and central agent management for a database, the syntax is as follows:

$ emca -config all db [-repos (create | recreate)] [-cluster] [-silent] [-backup] [parameters]

Where the parameters are:

The Enterprise Manager command line utility (emctl) provides the DBA a method to manage all aspects of the Enterprise Manager console including the OEM console, OEM agent and OMS (Oracle Management Service). The emctl utility is run as a command line invocation as shown here:

$ emctl [operation] [mode] [type] [flags] [parameters]

Only certain combinations of emctl command operations, modes and types are valid. The most common use case scenarios include:
