Oracle aborted_request_threshold tips

Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson

See my notes on using dbms_shared_pool procedure for pinning PL/SQL packages:

The aborted_request_threshold procedure of the dbms_shared_pool package can be used to prevent Oracle from flushing objects from the LRU list to make room for large objects. If there is insufficient free memory, an attempt to load an object whose size is above the threshold value will result in an ORA-4031 error. The threshold can be set as follows.

SQL> EXEC DBMS_SHARED_POOL.aborted_request_threshold(40000);
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.

You can see the current value of aborted_request_threshold in v$sgastat.  The Oracle docs note:

This procedure sets the aborted request threshold for the shared pool.

   threshold_size NUMBER);

Parameter Description
threshold_size Size, in bytes, of a request which does not try to free unpinned (not "unkeep-ed") memory within the shared pool. The range of threshold_size is 5000 to ~2 GB inclusive.

If you like Oracle tuning, see the book "Oracle Tuning: The Definitive Reference", with 950 pages of tuning tips and scripts.

You can buy it direct from the publisher for 30%-off and get instant access to the code depot of Oracle tuning scripts.
