Oracle 10g PL/SQL performance optimization improvements

Oracle Database Tips by Donald Burleson

The plsql_optimize_level parameter control the amount of PL/SQL optimization in Oracle 10g and the default value of "2" will re-write PL/SQL FOR loops to use bulking operations such as BULK collect and FORALL, with many shops finding that their PL/SQL run 10x to 20x faster, especially for cursor fetch-intensive operations.

Tony Jambu notes that Oracle 10g PL/SQL has shorter code paths and automatic re-write for BULK COLLECT and FORALL:

for I in my_cusror
loop
   . . .
end loop;
Oracle 10g automatically replaces the expensive single row fetching and optimizes performance by adding the BULK COLLECT syntax:
open my_cursor
loop
   fetch my_cursor BULK COLLECT into i limit 100
end loop;
close my_cursor

The Oracle docs note:

plsql_optimize_level  - This specifies the optimization level that will be used to compile PL/SQL library units. The higher the setting of this parameter, the more effort the compiler makes to optimize PL/SQL library units.

For details on 10g PL/SQL optimization, see my book "Oracle Tuning: The Definitive Reference".
