Non-ORA Errors

Oracle Error Tips by Stephanie Filio of  Burleson Consulting

On Oracle DBA Forums, a user is in need of  something to catch non-ORA errors, because "OSERROR won't catch an SP2 or a MSG error" and WHENEVER SQLERROR Exit SQL.SQLCODE does not catch non-ORA errors.

In response to this question, though there was no particular trap for non-ORA errors, many other users did offer valuable insight on non-ORA erors.

  • As for "other errors" (server I/O errors, disk failure), these will usually manifest as an Oracle error too, and application errors (e.g. a Java abort) can have their own error traps.
The challenge with trapping a program abort is that there may be no surviving thread to send the message to the screen

  • according to the Oracle-9i documentation, you can also trap "OSERROR"s like that: WHENEVER OSERROR

  • Use stored procedures to prevent errors

  • When you spool the output file (from the script) do a DOS findstr command looking for SP2 on the spooled file
