BIOGRAPHY

 

   

John Garmany is a graduate of West Point, an Airborne Ranger and a retired Lieutenant Colonel with 20+ years of IT experience and an active  SECRET security clearance. John is an OCP Certified Oracle DBA with a Master Degree in Information Systems, a Graduate Certificate in Software Engineering, and a BS degree (Electrical Engineering) from West Point. 

 

A Senior Oracle Trainer with Burleson Consulting, John is also a respected Oracle expert and author and chosen by Oracle Press to write the "Officially Authorized Edition" for  Oracle Database 10g Application Server Administration Handbook.  John also serves as a writer for DBAZine, Oracle Internals, and is the author these popular books:

  • A graduate of West Point and a retired LTC with 20+ years of proven leadership, strategic planning and management experience.  Active SECRET security clearance and experience working with multi-million dollar Information Technology projects at the Pentagon.

 

  • A Masters Degree in Information Systems, a Graduate Certificate in Software Engineering, and a degree in electrical engineering.

Employment History

 

Oracle Replication DBA – NDA (2002)

 

Performed complete multi-master replication with Oracle8i.  Implementation included creating updateable materialized views and complex multi-master replication refresh.

 

Remote Oracle DBA – Burleson Consulting (2001-Present)

 

Perform Remote Oracle DBA activities for several clients.  Duties include daily review of Oracle exception reports, analysis of Oracle trace and alert log files, patch application, and ad-hoc consulting in Oracle DBA activities.

 

Senior Oracle DBA – Troveris Inc – (Mar 2002 – Present)

 

Performed Oracle DBA activities including Oracle performance Tuning, Oracle administration, assisted in a Windows/UNIX migration, and wrote a Perl extract script to capture response time from Oracle SQL*Forms Server.

 

Senior Oracle DBA Consultant/Trainer – Burleson Enterprises Inc.

 

Performed Oracle DBA consulting services for numerous clients.  Duties include Oracle configuration, Oracle database administration, Oracle monitoring and migration of data and code.  Duties also included Oracle performance tuning, Oracle troubleshooting, and Oracle support for the Oracle developer staff.  Also developed customized scripts to extract SQL*Forms server data for end-to-end response time measurement.

 

Performed Oracle training in Oracle DBA and Oracle PL/SQL for on-site training for the United States Navy.

 

 

Integration Branch Chief – LTC - U.S. Army Europe – Aug 99 to Oct 2001

 

 Project manager for planning and coordinating the conversion of the Army European Command into an Army Service Component Command, a complete personnel and equipment reorganization of a 4 star headquarters.

 

Conducted a detail cost/benefit analysis of all Army organizations assigned to Europe, identifying organizational changes needed to implement the Commanding General’s directives and optimize theater capabilities.  This process required the use of multiple database systems to analize/model capabilities, modernization and cost.

 

 

Organizational Integrator – LTC - Department of the Army (Pentagon) April 96 – July 99

 

Participated in the review and validation of the Client Server Rewrite of a multi-million dollar Management and Accounting System and assisted in the development of the TAA (Total Army Analysis) automation software.

 

Database Consultant – Environmental Assets Analysts January – July 99

 

Developed, designed, and implemented a relational database system using MS-Access to mathematically model biological and functional classification systems associated with environmental impacts and restoration.

Forward Support Battalion, Ft. Bragg NC, July 93 – April 96

 

Developed an automated logistics tracking database that enabled the Logistics Operations Center to validate and predict supply requirements and problems.

 

Senior Company Observer/Controller – Captain, Joint Readiness Training

Center, Little Rock AR, Dec 89 - June 93

 

Validated the United States Army Joint Readiness Training Centers database software upgrade.  This project included working with the Verification and Validation Contractor, validating software bugs and the developing verification procedures of corrective actions.

  John Garmany is an avid sports lover, and was a member of the West Point swimming team.

Trained in Skydiving, scuba diving and snow skiing, John Garmany enjoys challenging himself with rigorous outdoor activities.

   
 

As a survivor of the rigorous and elite Army Ranger school, John loves camping and backpacking, traveling for miles into the high Rockies with his wife Connie.

   
John lives in Colorado where he enjoyed building his own servers from spare parts and training his prized Australian Shepard "Bodie".
