Installing Cluster Ready Services (CRS)

Oracle RAC Cluster Tips by Burleson Consulting

9. Now the installation begins. First, OUI copies software to the local node and then copies the software to the remote nodes.

10. Then at the end of copying the files, the OUI displays a dialog indicating that the script must be run on all the nodes as shown in Figure 6.13.

11. Figure 6.14 shows the output of the file. In this stage,  voting disk is formatted, daemons are added to inittab, and CSS daemon is activated.

12. Remember to run the scripts on each node one by one. When executing the on the last node, the script runs the following assistants without intervention:

a. Oracle Cluster Registry Configuration Tool (ocrconfig). If this tool detects a version of RAC, then the tool upgrades the OCR block format to an Oracle Database 10g OCR block format.

b. Cluster Configuration Tool (clscfg) - This tool automatically configures the cluster and creates the OCR keys.

13. This completes the CRS installation.

After the CRS is successfully installed, the following services should be running:

* oprocd - Process monitor for the cluster. Note that this process will only appear on platforms that do not use vendor clusterware with CRS.

* evmd - Event manager daemon that starts the racgevt process to manage callouts.

* ocssd - Manages cluster node membership and runs as oracle user. Failure of this process results in cluster restart.

* crsd - Performs high availability recovery and management operations such as maintaining the OCR. Also manages application resources and runs as root user and restarts automatically upon failure.

The Installer also adds entries to the /etc/init.d as shown below. The main init scripts help to spawn processes required for cluster ready services functioning.

The /etc/ file controls and describes the INIT processes for the CRS. The details are shown next:

Also note that the ports used by the services are shown at the time of running The ports range from 49895 to 49898, and they are used for various services.

Using ports: CSS=49895 CRS=49896 EVMC=49897 and EVMR=49898

The netstat command shows ports listening.

Thus each node in the cluster will have the CRS Home to enable the clusterware to operate on each node.

This has been a description of the CRS installation and preparation of Cluster Environment in a typical Linux environment. The next step would be to install the Oracle Database software with RAC option on the selected cluster nodes.

In case of the operating platforms where vendor supplied clusterware is installed, follow the documentation supplied by the vendor. The next couple of sections will provide brief details. These methods are very specific to a particular server and platform.
