Support for Infiniband Technology

Oracle RAC Cluster Tips by Burleson Consulting

This is an excerpt from the bestselling book Oracle Grid & Real Application Clusters.  To get immediate access to the code depot of working RAC scripts, buy it directly from the publisher and save more than 30%.

With the support and availability of Infiniband for Oracle database and Oracle RAC Clusters, client to server, server to server, and server to storage communication achieves higher throughput and reduces bottlenecks.

Oracle Database Resonance

Resources are dynamically expanded when needed and are shrunk when not needed or when priority tasks need them. Database Resonance is the provisioning utility for the Oracle RAC. Through the database resonance utility, it becomes possible for the administrators to define and configure the policy-based CPU provisioning in terms of nodes) and capacity on demand with automatic load balancing

DBA?s can define the services-level policies based on CPU utilization or service response times and also set up priority of each database. Oracle automatically starts and stops the additional instances to meet service-level policies.

It is estimated that this module or utility will be available in 10.2g database release.

Oracle Job Scheduler

This new tool allows the creation of jobs and schedules, which enables the assignment of the jobs with the appropriate schedules. Oracle scheduler provides many advanced capabilities to schedule and perform business and IT tasks in the enterprise grid.

Jobs can be grouped in job classes and a suitable priority can be assigned to these groups, which affect all the jobs under a group. Using the Oracle Resource Manager, the resource plans can be defined and assigned to the job classes. More details about the scheduler utility and the role it plays in the grid architecture will be examined further.

Oracle Database Resource Manager

Resource Manager provisions resources to database users or services within an Oracle database. It allows the DBA?s to limit the database resources allocated to grid users, applications or services. Wise use of resource manager can ensure that each grid user, grid application or service gets its fair share of the available computing resources. While this utility is available in previous releases of the database, it is now strengthened with additional features.

Data Provisioning and Sharing in the Grid Framework

In a multiple database scenario in the grid architecture, it may be necessary to move the data from one database to another more often than not. In case where all the database or data resources cannot be consolidated or pooled, one last resort approach would be active data sharing by moving data from an over utilized database to underutilized database. Sometimes the target database may be put to use for a particular purpose or particular department or particular region. At the same time, it may be necessary to move data to non-database platforms with the help of heterogeneous gateways.

In order to achieve most optimum and efficient data transfers, Oracle provides many new features like Oracle Streams, Transportable Tablespaces, Oracle Data pump, distributed SQL support, distributed transactions and gateways. These Grid Enabling and Data Sharing topics will be covered next.
