October 14, 2003
Oracle has announced a new type of Oracle license, aimed at the low-end
shop. The new "product" is called "Oracle Standard Edition One".
Oracle Standard Edition One
Oracle Standard Edition One costs less than $6k, and includes a license for one CPU
server. You can also Get Oracle Standard Edition One for $195 per
named user, with a five user minimum. This brings the minimum cost
of an Oracle license to less than $1k.
No doubt for me that Oracle Standard Edition One is a reaction to the lower cost offerings by SQL
Server and MySQL Enterprise Edition.
According to the Oracle Standard Edition One web page:

designed for small and medium-size enterprises such as easy, rapid
installation and simplified management.
