Oracle Standard Edition One (SE1) announced

Oracle Tips by Burleson Consulting

October 14,  2003

Oracle has announced a new type of Oracle license, aimed at the low-end shop. The new "product" is called "Oracle Standard Edition One".

    Oracle Standard Edition One

Oracle Standard Edition One costs less than $6k, and includes a license for one CPU server.  You can also Get Oracle Standard Edition One for $195 per named user, with a five user minimum.  This brings the minimum cost of an Oracle license to less than $1k.

No doubt for me that Oracle Standard Edition One is a reaction to the lower cost offerings by SQL Server and MySQL Enterprise Edition.

According to the Oracle Standard Edition One web page:

Oracle Standard Edition One has many features designed for small and medium-size such as easy, rapid installation and simplified management.

Standard Edition One is part of the complete Oracle Database family, offering full compatibility and scalability to tackle the biggest problems.

Customers can start small and grow as their needs grow.

However, there are many features of Oracle Enterprise Edition (EE) that are not available to Oracle Standard Edition One (SE).  These Oracle Enterprise Edition Features not available in Oracle Standard Edition One include:

  • Oracle Replication - Multi-master replication and database links

  • Oracle partitioning - For database over 100 gigabytes

  • Transparent Application Failover (TAF)

  • Fast-start fault recovery

  • Oracle Data Guard - Automated standby/failover database

  • Advanced queuing

  • SQL Optimizer plan stability - Freeze Oracle execution plans

  • Online index build

  • Analytical functions (rank, moving average)

  • Export transportable tablespaces

  • Materialized Views - No query re-write capability

  • Bitmap indexes

  • Oracle Parallel Query (OPQ) - Get fast large-table full-table scans

  • Parallel DML

  • Parallel index rebuilding

  • Parallel index scans

  • Parallel backup & recovery

  • Incremental backup & recovery

  • Oracle connection manager (CMAN)

  • Oracle advanced Security

If you like Oracle tuning, see the book "Oracle Tuning: The Definitive Reference", with 950 pages of tuning tips and scripts.
