College Degree required (or equivalent experience)

Oracle Tips by Burleson Consulting

The words ?College degree of Equivalent? strikes fear into many Oracle professionals who are charged with determining what ?real-world? experience is equivalent to college-level learning.

I?ve been doing this type of work for years and grown to hate it. It started evaluating college students for the State University of New York (SUNY) where I did nearly a hundred college-equivalency evaluations.

Since then I have to do a ?tech check? for many corporations who want to know if their high-school educated DBA has the college-level learning required by their HR department.

I have granted college-level credits to dozens of SUNY students, but by-and-large the ration was about 1 out of 5. Why the disparity? I think that it is because many non-college student ?don?t know what they don?t know?. In some cases, the students acknowledges that their misunderstanding about the contents of a college course, but we also see the dreaded ?challengers? who take-issue with the value of the class that they claim to have equivalent knowledge about.

I?ve had rejected students tell me that a data-structures class does not talk about linked-lists, rejected database architecture students tell me there is no such thing as a CODASYL Network architecture, and I?ve had several who had the audacity to accuse me of not knowing my stuff!

I?ve taught over 100 College and University courses (mostly in graduate school), and all professors are familiar with the adage ?If I do well it?s because I?m smart. If I fail it?s because you are a bad professor?. But that knowledge does not counter the gut-ache when you realize that a rejected candidate is going to use you as a sounding-board abut why their ?real-world? experience is as good as a College class.

Now don?t get me wrong, I granted lots of college-level credit when it was appropriate, but I always required the same scope and breadth of knowledge as someone who has actually completed the coursework.

Here are a few of my most memorable interviews, my ?nightmare? series.

Stories like these and other tips for the IT manager can be found in the book "Conducting the Programmer Job Interview" ($41.95) by Rampant TechPress:
