Gartner Group Concerned about Oracle Security Patch Number 68

Oracle Tips by Burleson Consulting

In a Gartner group article titled "Oracle users should take security patch 68 seriously", Gartner warns about an Oracle security exposure:

http://www3.gartner.com/DisplayDocument?ref=g_search&id=460726

Gartner says Oracle was not forthcoming about the risks of not applying Oracle security patch 68:

Oracle refuses to release more specific information about the security vulnerabilities in its products that are addressed by a recent patch. This policy increases the risks for Oracle customers.

The Gartner Group Recommends:

Recommendations:

  • If you use a supported version of this software, apply the Oracle-supplied patches immediately.

  • If you use an older, non-supported version of Oracle, such as 7.x or 8.0x, consider an immediate upgrade or switch to an alternative product.

  • Establish a patch schedule based on your servers' accessibility from the outside and the business value of the information stored on them.

  • Once details of specific exploits appear, determine whether you can set up an SQL*NET-capable deep-packet inspection firewall or intrusion prevention system to detect and shut down attacks.

  • Consider field-level encryption to protect data from unauthorized access (though without more details on the vulnerabilities, selecting an appropriate product will be difficult).

  • Check Oracle's MOSC FAQ frequently for information on this patch, because it has been updated several times, with some patches withdrawn and reissued.

  • Ask Oracle to follow Microsoft and other industry leaders that disclose the details of their vulnerabilities and provide security patches freely to anyone on any supported version of their products.
