Oracle scoffs at BEA's buyout proposal

One day after BEA set its selling price at $21 per share. BEA Systems Friday said it plans to let Oracle's $17 per share offer expire on Sunday at 5 p.m. pacific. The $21 per share price is a multiple of nearly 11 times BEA's last 12 months reported maintenance revenues.,289142,sid41_gci1279257,00.html?track=sy40&asrc=RSS_RSS-7_40

In an open letter to BEA’s board of directors on Thursday, Oracle president Charles Phillip wrote, “our proposal at $17 per share is the only offer.”  Phillips indicated that obviously no other companies thought BEA is worth $17 per share, let alone $21 per share.

If BEA allows Oracle’s $17 per share offer to expire on Sunday at 5 p.m. (PST) Phillips said, “Oracle will move on and evaluate other potential acquisitions.”  Oracle’s offer to BEA was made about two weeks ago; BEA totally turned turn down the offer but stressed interest in wanting to negotiate.

Experts say an Oracle buyout of BEA would most likely make Oracle the industry leader in enterprise infrastructure software. 'If Oracle does successfully acquire BEA, what they're going to have is probably the best [or] one of the best high end middleware platforms.
