Warning - OEM Oracle Grid Control Requires Extra Cost Packs! If you get audited by Oracle you may find yourself paying a fine for using all of the OEM grid control features without
purchasing the $6,000 Oracle diagnostic and tuning packs.
Starting in Oracle 10g, using the built-in ADDM or querying the Active Session History (ASH) or Automatic Workload Repository (AWR) tables requires an extra cost license. Many shop accidently query these restricted tables
and the activity is logged within Oracle hidden auditing facility, to be revealed upon an audit by Oracle Corporation. See these important notes on Oracle’s feature auditing and the dba_feature_usage_statistics view. The docs note that there is a hierarchy of products that you must purchase to use all of the Oracle OEM Grid control features.
To access all of the features you must first buy the $3,000 Diagnostic Pack, before you can buy the $3,000 Oracle Tuning pack: “The Oracle Diagnostics Pack is a prerequisite product to the Oracle Tuning Pack” The Oracle Tuning Pack is incorporated into Oracle Enterprise Manager.
If you have not purchased the required licenses you must perform special steps to remove the Tuning Pack components from OEM if Grid Control
is to be safely used without buying the extra-cost licenses: “To determine which links in Oracle Enterprise Manager Database Control and Grid Control are part of the Tuning Pack, do the following from the Enterprise Manager Home page: -
Click the Setup link on the upper right corner of the Enterprise Manager Home page. -
Click the Management Pack Access link. The Management Pack Access page appears, which enables you to grant and remove access for all the management packs. -
For Enterprise Manager Database Control, remove access for the Database Tuning Pack and click Apply. -
For Enterprise Manager Grid Control, remove access for the Database Tuning Pack and click Apply. This disables all the links and tabs associated with the Tuning Pack in Enterprise Manager. All the disabled links and tabs are part of the Tuning Pack and therefore require a pack license.” The Oracle® Database Licensing Information, 10g Release 2 (10.2)
notes even more confusing license restrictions creating a labyrinthine maze of conditions: “Use of SQL Tuning Set is also permitted with the Database Tuning Pack license. If you have either the Database Tuning Pack or Real Application Testing option, you are permitted to use SQL Tuning Sets.” See these related notes on Oracle licensing.
