Lewis speaks on lower-cost
Oracle tools
The Oracle community appears to be price sensitive and lower-cost
alternatives to Oracle products are becoming more appealing.
We are now seeing endorsements of these alternative tools by some of
the top Oracle experts.
Lewis Cunningham, Oracle ACE and author of the top-rated blog "An
Expert's Guide to Oracle Technology", has announced that he is
presenting a paper titled "Integrating EnterpriseDB in your Oracle
Environment" at a large international database conference, and he
also notes that the migration from
Oracle to EnterpriseDB is not just for trivial applications.
This
Search Open Source article notes that Sony Online Entertainment
recently migrated a mission critical application to EnterpriseDB:
"There is certainly demand picking up for open source
databases, and we are going to be seeing more and more of these
larger companies adopting an open source database strategy,"
Yuhanna said.
"With Sony -- it was dealing with lots of data -- online
gaming data -- and paying $40,000 a processor to a company like
Oracle, and that certainly was adding up."
Licensing costs remain a concern for every DBA manager and
Lewis echo's many of the same concerns about high costs of
third-party Oracle tools, such as the TOAD product by Quest
Software:
"As much as I like TOAD, with
SQL Developer and the new free tools that seem to be being
released by everyone, why is Quest still charging so much?"
