New - Car identify theft scam!

In this amazingly cleaver scam of car-cloning, a crook can copy-down your car's VIN, put the VIN on an identical rental car, and sell the rental car as your car!

This is the latest scam where crooks copy and reproduce the VIN from your car to commit fraud.  This article notes how thieves copy your cars VIN number and sell a rental car as-if it was your own car!

Thieves know the vehicle identification number, VIN, is unique and different on every car. So first they copy VIN's from the Internet, car dealerships, from cars in malls and junkyards. They make perfect duplicates of the VIN plates and paperwork

Finally they steal a similar car and replace its VIN with the copied one.

Presto: it's cloned. The stolen car can no longer be identified as stolen; it has a new identity.

Some recommend that you now cover-up the VIN on your automobile.  There is another variation on this car identity theft scam:

  1. A thief rents a car.

  2. Your car, (identical to the rental car) is found and its "identity" is stolen by copying the Vehicle ID (VIN) number.

  3. The stolen identity (VIN) is cloned, and the fake VIN is applied to the rented car.

  4. The rental car is then offered for sale in a newspaper ad, posing as your car.

  5. Innocent buyer purchases the car from the thief as a regular private party sale.

  6. After a few days, the thief steals the car back from the buyer, re-applies the real VIN and returns it to the rental shop.

  7. Your car is now reported as stolen, and you are arrested, jailed and sentenced to 5-10 years in prison.
