New Google SearchWiki feature allows you to customize your Oracle search results

24 November 2008

Over the past few years it's become increasing difficult to find credible Oracle information on the web.  Fakers, self-appointed experts, and anonymous beginners clutter the web with incorrect and unverifiable information, making Oracle searches a chancy endeavor.

This new Google "Search Wiki" feature allows each Google user to either "promote" or "remove" a specific web site from your search results, remembering your customizations for later searches.

While Google has done a remarkable job in making relevant pages come to the top of Oracle searches, there are still problems from fake Oracle users groups and foreigners who create spam pages to divert traffic and clutter our searches with phony and stolen content.

Google researchers report that this new Wiki feature will be immune to abuse and have special mechanisms to detect people who "self promote" their own pages or "remove" pages from their business competitors.

The Google Wiki also allow public comments about web pages in hopes of improving the quality of the search experience.  Because it does not allow anonymous comments (it requires everyone to be signed-on in order to make comments), it is Google's hope that unscrupulous people will not abuse this feature.

However, some search engine experts are skeptical, and note that there could be a new cottage industry of people in 3rd world countries creating Google ID's for the sole purpose of promoting some web sites, or trashing others.
