Microsoft Dynamics AX ERP to compete with Peoplesoft, Oracle Applications Siebel, J.D. Edwards and SAP

In the classic "build vs. buy" conundrum, IT managers struggle to understand about the costs and benefits of a custom solution vs. using an off-the-shelf ERP solution such as Peoplesoft, Oracle Applications Siebel, J.D. Edwards or SAP. We can now add Dynamics AX to the list of ERP's.

Now we see Microsoft entering the ERP market with Dynamics AX, an ERP product that can use either Oracle 10g or SQL server as the back-end database. MS notes that it will have the look and feel of Microsoft Office, making it very appealing:

The suite is set to adopt the same user interface as the forthcoming Office 2007 productivity suite, where the toolbars and menus are replaced by a so-called ribbon that will adjust to the task that users are performing.

The AX product is one of four ERP suites that Microsoft develops. The company is working to merge its products into a single suite.
