Are DBA’s needed anymore?

There was an interesting “debate” titled “Are DBA’s needed anymore at the IOUG conference in Orlando, and an excellent write-up by Tom DiChiara:,289142,sid41_gci1088028,00.html

It’s too bad that they did not choose an opinion to debate, as the answer to their debate question “Are DBA’s needed anymore” is clearly a “yes” fact that can easily be verified by employment surveys.  Despite the non-debatable topic (Of course, DBA’s are not needed for small stand-alone vendor systems on a PC, while DBA’s are indispensable for large mission-critical systems), there were some good quotes.  George Dobbs had the best quote of the debate:

“Companies need analysis and knowledge, not redo logs, tablespaces, DDL, DML, etc."

I’ve always noted that a DBA is the chief custodian of the data resource, and this opinion was also expressed in the reader comments:,289142,sid41_gci1091804,00.html

David Colbourn noted the expanding role of the database administrator, a job duty change that looks much like a DBA job description of the 1980’s when the DBA had a much broader set of responsibilities:

As a DBA, other tasks that have fallen on me include:

- Resident SQL tuning expert

- Logical modeler and business rule analyst

- Physical data designer responsible for data synchronization and integrity

- Systems capacity planner/ performance monitor in charge of locking, deadlock and concurrency issues

- Systems software installation configuration and tuning

- Operational systems trouble shooter

- Assistant security administrator

- Assistant storage management administration

- Assistant scheduling system administration

- Assistant change control systems administration

- JAD facilitator

- Hardware and software systems designer
