Computer Science Majors in Decline

IT and tech companies have begun to worry that there will not be enough skilled IT professionals to meet the demands of growing job positions.  This is partly due to the fact that fewer students are going for degrees in the computer science field:

New enrollment in North American computer science and engineering programs has dropped four years straight, falling 10% during the 2003-04 school year from the year before, says the Computing Research Association, a trade group for computer professors.

Although there is no shortage of qualified professionals yet, there has been a considerable drop in enrollment at  some of the top universities.  IBM is trying to stop the drop in enrollment by offering free software and support to many colleges.

BM is trying to stop that. Today, it plans to announce its most widespread college-support program. IBM will give schools millions of dollars in software, and offer the expertise of more than 1,000 staffers.

The computer giant also will announce a partnership with the University of Arkansas to create classes for students seeking tech jobs at Wal-Mart, a major state employer. The program will be part of the university's information-systems major, which is under the business school's jurisdiction. "You need a marriage of technical skills and business acumen," says Buell Duncan, the IBM executive in charge of the program.
