Oracle User Group considers Charity status

March 22, 2005

In the Fall 2004 issue of

( we see that The Rocky Mountain Oracle Users Group is considering status as a 501(c)(3) Charity.  According to the article:

“Most people are surprised that RMOUG is not a non-profit organization.  Back in the mid 1990’s, RMOUG looked into applying for non-profit status, but the verdict at that time was that it could not be considered a non-profit or charitable organization, mainly because of the affiliation to Oracle Corporation.”

To address this issue, RMOUG is considering a change in status to become a charity.  A Federal designation, a charity can be a research institution (American Cancer Society), a service organization (Blood banks, Tsunami relief charities), a religion, or an educational institution (e.g. The Seeing Eye).

According to the article, RMOUG is determined to become a charity, allowing them to accept donated funds to help their needy membership:

“The current board of directors is determined to obtain this crucial non-profit 501(c)(3)status for RMOUG.”

While a perfectly legal move, making an Oracle users group a charity seems to imply that the organization is fostering education among some disadvantaged group, not an upper-middle class group of prosperous of computer scientists.
