Oracle RAC – Linux vs. Solaris
shootout
Oracle guru Mike Ault just published a great article on the debate
about whether Linux of Solaris is best for Oracle Real Application
Clusters.

Titled, ”A Shootout Between Sun E4500 and a Linux Redhat3.0 AS
Cluster Using Oracle10g“ the Mike Ault article discusses a benchmark
on Linux vs. Solaris performance using a TPC-H data warehouse
benchmark with Oracle 10g RAC clusters.
Ault’s TPH-H benchmark on RAC Solaris vs. RAC Linux shows Linux as
consistently faster, both for loads and queries. Ault came to the
following conclusions:
- Linux on Intel performance beats typical
Sun installations
- SATA Array performance keeps up with
native FC Arrays
- Placing an application onto RAC can
provide performance improvements without requiring excessive
modification of the application
- Oracle ASM is very sensitive to disk array
arrangement
Ault is considered a leading expert on Oracle Real Application
Clusters and Oracle 10g Grid. He is the author of two books on
Oracle9i RAC and Oracle 10g Grid technology:
